Trump is doing to the US what Musk did to Tesla, brand destruction. This, in turn, makes it even more difficult to negotiate trade deals as international popular opinion about Trump and by extension the US is very negative.

And those tariffs are still very much in existence. Actual trade is declining rapidly.

“For the week ending April 14, global container booking volumes slipped 1.57% week over week and 9.94% year over year, according to Vizion. U.S. import bookings declined 12.15% w/w and 22.37% y/y, while China-to-U.S. bookings dropped 22.15% w/w and 44% y/y.”

“Trump has made it clear that he will reward those who pay tribute to him in various forms” This includes paying him directly. He’s hosting a dinner for those who’ve bought his crypto coin. This is directly paying Trump for access and, no doubt, influence. No wonder he’s stopped enforcement of many laws about corruption and bribery.

Then there’s the media companies settling bogus lawsuits he’s brought, paying millions, e.g., https://www.brookings.edu/articles/trumps-cbs-lawsuit-ties-media-freedom-to-fccs-regulatory-power/
